Former Golden Eaglets attacker, Philip Osondu, has died. He was aged 48.
Sources in the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed Osondu’s death.
Also, Osondu’s family friend, who is based in Belgium, Esther Nwachukwu, confirmed the Golden Eaglets player’s death.
“He went to work and felt unwell, went to the hospital and was confirmed dead on arrival,” she said.
While mourning the deceased, ex-Super Eagles international, Mutiu Adepoju, said he was shattered by Osondu’s death.
He said this via his Twitter handle, @MutiuAdepoju8, hours after Osundu was announced dead.
“Osondu was my teammate at Saudi 89 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where we helped Nigeria finish in second position. (I am) so shattered about the news of his passing. Dear lord, do grant him eternal rest and console his family,” he tweeted.
In 1987, Osondu participated in the FIFA U-16 Championship in Canada, where Nigeria reached the final, but lost on penalties to the Soviet Union. However, the attacker emerged as the best player in the tournament.
He also participated in the FIFA U-20 competition in Saudi Arabia.
Osondu played for El Kanemi Warriors before RSC Anderlecht bought him to Belgium in 1988.
