The Bayelsa State governorship election has come and gone, and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), David Lyon, has been declared winner of the poll. Lyon, who polled 352,552 votes, defeated his closest rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Duoye Diri, who scored 143,172 votes. This development, which ended PDP’s rule in Bayelsa State, wouldn’t have been possible if the PDP had put its house in order and not undermine the influence of Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan. Recall that the relationship between Jonathan and the outgoing governor of the state, Seriake Dickson, hasn’t been cordial. This is because both men didn’t agree on who should succeed Dickson as governor of the state. Dickson was said to have sidelined the former president and his allies and fielded Diri as the governorship candidate of the PDP. Jettisoning the rotation arrangement between the three senatorial districts of the state and supporting Diri forced Jonathan to

Ex-PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan Abandoned PDP And Delivered Bayelsa state To APC

The biggest highlight of the governorship election in Bayelsa state, apart from the sad spectacle of thugs roaming in broad daylight and carting away ballot boxes, is the fact that the opposition All Progressives Congress won in the polling booth and Local Government Area of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. This surprise, heightened by the known allegiance of Goodluck Jonathan to the PDP considering that his rise in politics was made possible by powerbrokers in the party that claimed Nigeria’s Presidency for 16 straight years, is completed by the defeat of the PDP and the failure of incumbent Seriake Dickson to name a successor. For one, since the return to democracy in 1999, Bayelsa state has been governed by the PDP and the APC has struggled badly to gain a foothold in the south-south region of the country, with Edo State being the only state it governs. The surprising u-turn and the obvious refusal by Goodluck Jonathan to back his party’s candidate has raised eyebrows acros

Bayelsa Election: Governor Seriake Dickinson Lost Bayelsa To APC Candidate David LYON

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state. If the events that unfolded before the Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State were anything to go by, they clearly indicated a deep division in the state chapter of the PDP that ultimately led to its dismal outing during the polls. The opposition APC had never made any impressive outing in Bayelsa until now; but analysts believed that the recent growing indifference of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to show commitment to the success of the PDP might have contributed to the turn of events. Outgoing Governor Seriake Dickson had reportedly hijacked the PDP’s machinery and in the process sidelined the former president and his allies in the scheme of things, all in a move to have his chosen candidate as successor. Governor Dickson was said to have singlehandedly bankrolled the party’s candidate and jettison the age long rotation arrangement between the three senatorial districts of the state.
