Ihedioha made during his reaction to the judgment which has changed things and surprised many Nigerians.
Mixed reactions have continued to trail the sacking of former governor of Imo state, Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by the Supreme Court of Nigeria and subsequent declaration of that Hope Uzodinma of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, is the authentic winner of the governorship election held in the state.
Different people, top politicians and other leaders had since reacted to the Supreme Court judgment which came to many as a big surprise. However, Ihedioha was silent since the judgment was made on Tuesday. At last, Ihedioha on Wednesday disagreed with the verdict of the Supreme Court which sent him packing as Governor of Imo State.
This article sets to stress the most important statement Ihedioha made during his reaction to the judgment which has changed things and surprised many Nigerians. Although, Ihedioha disagreed with the judgment, he said something significant during his statement in reaction to the judgment.
In his reaction, Ihedioha's statement partly read, “No doubt, yesterday’s Supreme Court verdict, came to us as a rude shock and surprise considering the facts on ground, legal precedence and clear verdict of Imo People on March 9 2019, that returned me as Governor with the highest valid votes of 273,404.''
Ihedioha did not hide his feeling that he disagreed with the judgment and took it as being very unfair to him. Most importantly, among other things Ihedioha said, he submitted to the rule of law as captured in this statement he made, “I do not agree with the judgement of the Supreme Court. I think it is unfair, unjust and does not reflect the voting that took place during the elections. It also didn’t take care of the sensibilities of the people of Imo State. But as true democrats, Engr Gerald Irona and I have no option but to respect the outcome of that judgement.''
This particular statement by Ihedioha, ''But as true democrats, Engr. Gerald Irona and I have no option but to respect the outcome of the judgment',' became the climax of his reaction because it changed things for good. It would surely trigger tears among many of Ihedioha's supporters, many Nigerians and other people sympathetic to his cause. Just like Goodluck that conceded defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 presidential election which saved Nigeria from chaos, Ihedioha's resignation to fate to obey the Supreme Court verdict has saved the day.
He went on to appeal to his supporters to remain calm and give Uzodinma the same support they had given him during his reign so far. Imo needs to be calm and peaceful to experience development.
Chaos and other violence would have been prevented by the decision of Ihedioha to obey the Supreme Court's decision. Democracy is at work. It did not favour Ihedioha today, it may actually favour him tomorrow as life goes on.
