Gender shouldn’t be a factor in determining whether or not a person can be a great President. A person’s leadership abilities should depend on their individual strengths, intelligence, character and personality traits. However historically in many cases especially in Nigeria, women weren’t encouraged to take on leadership roles as often as their male counterparts, contributing to an imbalance of political power.
Today, the imbalances are thinning, traditional gender roles are being departed from. Women are taking up more leadership roles more than ever, in the corporate world, in entertainment and most especially in social activism. This is why young powerful influencers like Natacha Akide (Symply Tacha), Chimamanda Adichie, Agbani Darego, Uche Pedro and the likes can leverage their social standing to cultivate a young population receptive to a female political leader.
Here are three reasons why Nigeria needs a Female President.
1. IT WILL HELP OTHER WOMEN ATTAIN LEADERSHIP ROLES
Despite the progress in leadership that women have made, the glass ceiling still exists, ancient notions about women’s roles and abilities are still shockingly prevalent. A woman President will create a ripple effect on all sectors of society spurring Women to attain the pinnacle of leadership in whatever capacity they function in. A woman President will also broaden the imagination of the girl child to aspire for the pinnacle of political success.
2. EQUITABLE REPRESENTATION
Nigeria has a population with a relatively even gender ratio, this makes it inequitable that in 60 years of its democracy a representative of the female gender hasn’t made it to the pinnacle of political power especially when the performance of their male counterparts have been far from stellar. It is time for Nigeria to take a cue from States like Great Britain, Liberia, Iceland and give a female President a chance
3. GREAT MULTITASKING ABILITY
One quality of great leaders is their ability to multi-task. This grants an advantage to women because are natural multi-taskers. Nigeria is burdened with critical multidimensional problems that need to be tackled simultaneously, the ability to decisively and quickly respond to simultaneous and different tasks or problems at a time will be a critical component to successful leadership in Nigeria.
One thing is certain, Nigeria is past ready for great leadership and if women like Tacha can guarantee us that, we are willing to give her the chance.
