Cristiano Ronaldo Scores 99th Portugal Goals To Silence Luxemburg Fans Who Chanted Messi Name

Cristiano Ronaldo is chasing history.

He's aiming to reach the milestone of 100 international goals for Portugal, something that no one has ever done before for his nation.

The Juventus superstar is currently on 98 and would have fancied his chances of scoring two more against Luxembourg on Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, though, things didn't go to plan for Ronaldo in the first half.

He lined up a long-range effort from outside the box early on, but it was one he took more in hope than expectation.

Instead of catching it clean, Ronaldo shanked his shot high and wide.

It was a terrible effort and afterwards, the Luxembourg fans made sure he knew just how bad it was.

A chant of 'Messi, Messi, Messi' broke out around the stadium, as supporters mocked CR7 by signing his great rivals name loud and proud. Check out a clip of the clear Messi chants, below:

That's top, top s***housery.

But, as you can probably guess, it was Ronaldo who had the last laugh.

He got a goal late on, confirming Portugal’s safe passage through to Euro 2020, all while silencing the fans who chanted Messi’s name.

It wasn't a classic though, as he tapped in from a yard out after the Luxembourg goalkeeper spilt his teammate's shot. But they all count and Ronaldo now has 99 for Portugal.

The captain scored his nation's second on Sunday after Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in the first half. You can see the first goal below.

Not bad at all.

A 2-0 win was enough to send Portugal to next summer's Euro 2020 tournament.
